It’s your turn July babies because the beautiful Ruby is your birthstone!
Part of the Corundum family, rubies are the most valuable form in this gem family. Sapphires also fall into the corundum family category. Typically, the most valuable rubies form in marble deposits. When exposed to ultraviolet light, they fluoresce a vivid bright red. Rubies can also be found with a phenomenon called asterism. This causes reflections from tiny, needle-like inclusions that are oriented in several specific directions. The result of this effect yields what we call “star rubies”. In many cases though, gem cutters will choose to heat treat the stones to eliminate any asterism, creating a more transparent and vibrant ruby. The most important source for fine quality rubies in the world is in Mogok Myanmar. Larger fine quality rubies are rare, meaning that many of the larger stones have more inclusions within.
